It is a utility company generating electricity for organizations and consumers throughout Spain. The company was incorporated in February 2000 and has its registered principal place of business in Bilbao, Spain. It is one of the leading private electric utilities worldwide and the largest renewable energy operator in the world. Its operations encompasses the generation, transmission, distribution and marketing of electricity and natural gas. It is one of the main companies with more than 100 years of experience in the world and is present in approximately 40 countries. The company's vision is to be the consumers' company of choice, as a product of its commitment to creating value, improving people's quality of life and safeguarding the environment. The company distributes more than 120,000 million kWh to approximately 18 million users in Spain and Latin America. Through its subsidiary Ingeniería y Construcción (Iberinco), Iberdrola is also engaged in the engineering and construction activities, especially of electric power generation, distribution and control facilities, as well as on obtaining contracts abroad and outside of the Group. Since 1993, Iberdrola has combined its property businesses into one company. It began to intensify its residential development activity in 1995. It considerably increased its investment in 1999, focusing mainly on three broad areas: housing development, development and management of rental property, and management and development of land. It currently operates throughout the country, and offers a diverse range of products: starter homes, tourist residences, offices, industrial warehouses, shopping centers, among others. In 2005, Iberdrola became one of the first energy companies in the world to obtain the ISO-9001:2000 certificate for its Comprehensive Risk System, which puts the company at the cutting edge of this management area. In November 2006, Iberdrola bought the Scottish company Scottish Power, which is expected to generate approximately 6,000 Megawatts of renewable energy.
